This project considers the use of the glitch. A glitch is a short-lived irregularity or fault. When I think of glitch, I associate it with the digital world. Digital screens such as those on computers are where I typically see glitches. I have used the glitch effect in my work in the past, but it will be interesting to actually create a glitch. I associate glitches with a fault, but exploring the intentionality of creating one and considering the aesthetic elements of them is far from that. As we have been learning about the process of glitching, we have been breaking the images or videos. This notion is interesting to me as a lot of my work is about repair and connection. I am curious to see how intentional breaking will present itself with my aesthetic and art practice.
I think I will use the act of intentional breaking as a language to describe my relationship with my heritage. Being physically displaced from Kashmir is a theme that has been shaping my land art. I am interested in the landscape of Kashmir, and experiencing it through the landscape of Colorado. My mother always tells me how similar the ecosystems and topography of the two are. In this way, I can connect to ancestral land and access those same memories. My body will interact in the same way that my ancestors did with the land. I want to include motifs that symbolize this connection. However, the connection feels very distant and dream-like. I have been engaging with the surreal style of the AI-generated art, and I think it fits with the theme of distance.
