Sculpture

Date

Location

Boulder, CO

Materials

Copper sheet, copper wire, Oculus VR headset

The copper industry in Kashmir, or Kandkari work, is deeply rooted in the culture. However, the motifs I etched onto the surface of the copper were taken from the weaving industry. This disconnect of motifs relates to the disconnect I feel with my own culture. I incorporated the “paisley,” or traditionally known as buteh, pattern, which originated in Kashmir and was globally dispersed and appropriated. I used traditional buteh rugs to create a pattern in Rhino, which was then cut into vinyl. The vinyl was used as a resist when etching, and silver was inlaid in the piece to create a high contrast. The buteh pattern forms eyes, indicating that the wearer is looking for the first time. The piece is accompanied by a VR world containing a creature inspired by rug patterns, mirroring the motifs on the headset cover. The cover is equipped with venting holes, as well as holes for the Oculus’ cameras and charging ports.
